Rethink Rubbish

What’s My Day?

Rethink rubbish in southland!

Red Bin Collection

All eligible properties are issued with a red-lidded mobile bin for the collection of rubbish by their local Council.

Each Council has a different collection time, frequency and bin size which is noted below.

HANDY TIPS!
  1. If it’s windy outside and your bin is barely filled, in order to avoid the bin toppling over and spilling its contents, you might want to consider waiting until it is sufficiently filled for collection.
  2. If your bin is only getting partially emptied, then it may be overstuffed or compacted.  If the rubbish would have been pushed tightly against the bin walls, it may get stuck at the bottom when the bin gets tipped completely upside-down.  Please put rubbish loosely to ensure that they get emptied completely. If your food scraps are sticking, put a little bit of water in the bottom of your bin to loosen things up.

Late or Missed collections

We do not pick up recycling or rubbish bins if:

  • They have been put out at the wrong time (too late) or are in the wrong place
  • It was not their scheduled collection day. Check your collection day here
  • The bin was overfull (open lid) or was too heavy to empty
  • They contain non-permitted items. See what cannot go in yellow rubbish bins.

If you have meet the collection guidelines and your recycling or rubbish was missed, please report the incident to your local Council.

  • Gore District Council
  • Invercargill City Council
  • Southland District Council

If we missed collecting your whole street, immediately call your local Council and report the missed collection.

What’s My Day?

If you’re not sure when your bin day is, find out on our bin day page.

If your property is new the system may not yet be able associate it with a collection day. In this case, ask a neighbour, email us or phone your local Council for more information.

Please note: there is an error in the Collection Day search for Gore District Council properties due to the new kerbside glass recycling and rubbish collection service. Please refer to the 2024 collections calendar for correct pickup information: 2024 Gore District Council
