Fresh Look and New Features on Website

One-Stop Shop for Waste

A one-stop-shop local website is now available to Southlanders who want to know more about waste.

Invercargill City Council Waste Minimisation Officer Donna Peterson said the new site was a collaborative effort by Invercargill City Council, Southland District Council, Gore District Council and Environment Southland.

“The aim of the new website is to be a one-stop-shop for Southlanders to find out about reducing rubbish and what, how, and where to recycle” Ms Peterson said.

Ms Peterson said councils regularly receive calls for residents asking about how to be more sustainable.

In developing the website, the team hand three clear objectives, the site had to be:
         (a) Informative – relevant, local content
         (b) Colourful – environmental colours and Southland images
         (c) Easy to navigate

“The world of waste is a fascinating one” said Ms Peterson “which is why the website will be updated on a daily basis, as new information comes to hand.”

New features include:

  • Quick links to help users easily navigate through popular pages
  • A “take action” section for individuals, schools, businesses and community groups
  • Waste Bite Library or bite sized waste tips for people who live, work and play
  • Host the Invercargill Environment Centres Radio Show news stories
  • Host the Southland Community Wastebusters Trust  weekly Busting Waste Article (that is published in the Southland Times newspaper)
  • Link to Southland Councils and waste specific websites
  • Find the latest facts and figures for waste
  • Tips to help you reduce your waste and be more eco-friendly
  • Catch up on the latest news from around the globe
  • Users can sign up for regular updates
  • Events calendar

That’s not all, upcoming features that will be released over the coming months include:

  • Waste Aware Southland Newsletter, which will provide seasonal advice and articles on Southlanders getting involved and reducing their waste
  • Edition 2 of the Southland Resource Directory (Waste) will be housed here, with users able to view pages without having downloading a full electronic copy.  This will also allow the directory to be kept up to date as new information is released
  • Everyone’s favourite Enviro-Granny hasn’t been forgotten with back issues of her green column being available to download

The fresh look is part of the new branding for WasteNet Southland which is raising its profile to promote its message of waste reduction to Southlanders.
