Reduce

To minimise the need to replace joinery, where practical choose good quality pieces that can last you a lifetime. Alternatively you could go with the second-hand option, where you can find some good quality one-of-a-kind pieces

Repair

Rather than replacing the item, why not see if it can be repaired.  Check out the Joinery Manufacturers listed in the yellow pages.

Reuse

Here are a few ideas of what you can do with your joinery:

• Refurbish for a new look - sand, paint, replace fabric, new handles etc
• Cut up for firewood and or kindling
• Strip it for parts i.e. hinges, handles, screws
• Turn an old window into a cold frame for your garden
• Use it to make another piece of furniture (eg turn a bed head board into a coffee table)
• Donate it
• On sell

Disposal

If you are unable to repair or reuse the item, the next best practical option is disposal to the regional landfill through your local transfer station.
