World of Waste Field Trip
The WoW field trip is about having a closer look at the waste environment - recycling centre, waste transfer station, closed landfill and resource recovery centre. All of these areas play an important part in the world of waste.
The World of Waste Tour is a genuine learning experience for the students and fits well with any waste themed unit that is being conducted in schools. The field trip is structured around visits to the following facilities:
-
The Recycling Centre where the contents of Invercargill kerbside recycling crates are sorted and baled
-
The Garage Reuse Shop which receives, repairs, and sells products (that were destined for the landfill)
-
Invercargill Waste Transfer Station where rubbish is bulked up and transported to the Southland Regional Landfill
-
Pleasure Bay Reserve the site of the closed New River Estuary Landfill where decades of rubbish has been buried.
Each site takes 30 minutes to tour. Please note tours are limited to 30 students (for health and safety reasons).
